This is the story of a guy named Neil who is working for a restaurant. He does things, see's things, and then (eventually) writes about them. He is not quite sane...which is probably fairly obvious.

The Daytime Manager

Don't tell anyone, but I'm posting this from work. It's 20 to 10 and I'm getting the place set up for the day shift.

For those of you that don't know what the deal is...allow me to explain. No, it's too complex...allow me to summarize.

-Neil returns from Europe.
-Neil needs job.
-Neil contacts the restaurant he used to work at, Blackhawk Grille (www.blackhawkgrille.com).
-Laurie, the GM, hires Neil as a "supervisor" with his main duty to be getting the hosting staff in shape and better trained.
-Neil ends up having to take over the banquet/event department until new person is hired.
-Neil finds out Laurie and Jeff (the other full time manager) are leaving for another restaurant, leaving Meghan (a junior manager) to run the place...along with corporate's help.
-The other restaurant, Forbes Mill, approaches Neil and wants to hire him away from Blackhawk. Neil is unsure.
-Blackhawk isn't providing Neil with what he wants, the exposure he'd like, and the respect he deserves. Meghan is nice, but isn't willing to share much of anything with Neil beyond "do this".
-Neil is meeting with Forbes Mill today (3/2/06) to deeply discuss what Neil can do for them...looks like they want Neil to be a full time lunch manager.

So that is that! Exciting eh?

The restaurant business is very different than...say...accounting. Accounting you can easily say "Thursday is enter invoice day, Friday is run checks day, Saturday you don't work, etc". In the restaurant business it's more like "Thursday ANYTHING MIGHT HAPPEN, Friday ANYTHING MIGHT HAPPEN, Saturday ANYTHING MIGHT..." and so on. So it can be a struggle sometimes for me...for someone who is used to a bit more structure in his working life. But you know what?

It's fun.

It's really fun.

It's really tiring, unpredictable, and fun.

So I'm going to open the safe and count the money now. Good times, good times.
